Facial and Dental Aesthetics: Case Study
By Dr. Jason Olitsky
This 34 year old patient, Nicole, presented not only with aggressive anterior wear but also diminished facial symmetry due to her reduced vertical height displaying a shortened chin to nose measurement, but the lingual inclination that made this patient appear older than her years. She desired a feminine, beautiful smile and I found this to be an ideal example of how dental aesthetics can oftentimes improve facial aesthetics dramatically. |
Nicole agreed with a treatment plan that would not only address her aesthetic concerns but her functional issues as well. Her excessive anterior wear was a direct result of posterior interferences. Her pre-operative CEJ to CEJ measurement was only 12mm. We opted to open her vertical and restore Nicole with a final CEJ to CEJ of 16mm and prescribed the wax up. We utilized her temporaries as a living splint to ensure her comfort level with the increase in length and measured her joint vibration pre-operatively and in provisional stage. A key component to protecting her restorations and stabilizing her occlusion, was to ensure proper anterior guidance. This case was fabricated by the aesthetic team at Gold Dust, with a combination of Ivoclar’s Empress Esthetic and e.Max Zirpress Veneers and Crowns.

Notice the natural vitality and translucency with even as bright of shade as this 020/030 case. The prep shade was a very light ND2, allowing the reflective properties of Empress to really shine through. Personally, I find the key to success in many of these cases is having the relationship with your ceramist to be able to appropriately chose the right material and Rob along with the entire Gold Dust Team assists in ensuring the material will give us not only the strength where we need it but the aesthetics.
A case like this is so rewarding, not only because we far exceeded our patient’s goals, but we are able to see a patient’s entire personality come out with a subtle change in facial aesthetics in addition to perfecting dental aesthetics.
